What Are
Cash Flow Assets?
A cash flow asset is an asset from which a person or a business
receives one or more payments at some point in the future.
The example most people are familiar with is the individual who wins a
state lottery and receives annual payments for the next 20 to 30
years. A person who is receiving annual lottery payments can
elect to sell all or part of those future lottery payments for a
lump-sum payment today. The same thing can be done with many
other forms of cash flow assets.
The lottery payment example is just one that would apply to an
individual. What about a cash flow asset for a business? The
most common cash flow asset for a business is its accounts receivable
(also known as “invoices”). Normally a business must wait 30, 60,
90, or more days for payment of its accounts receivable or
invoices. The time delay in receiving payment may limit the
ability of the business to grow or just survive. This time delay
can be partially or completely eliminated by selling the invoice at a
discount to provide much needed cash now to allow a business to survive
or grow by taking on new business.
